HowTo: Modular Gaming Table - Part 3

It's terrain thursday (nah just kidding, atm I am in the mood to do so) so I will post another part of my modular gaming table series. After preparing the six basic modules and shaping some with hills it is time to get dirty and put some paint onto our modules. Therefore we mix our own structure paint (the paste/paints you can buy are WAY too expensive). Besides a big bucket (~5l bucket is big enough) we need:

Bucket of PVA/white glue:

Approx. cost:  ~ 8 Euro

Bag of bird grit:

Approx. cost: ~ 90ct

Bottle of brown paint:

Approx. cost: ~ 5 Euro

Pour everything together, in the end we used a mixing ratio of about 1:1:1:1 (water, paint, sand, glue). Just try it out what suits you best. The structure paint should not be too runny and should not be as thick as toothpaste. You should be able to spread it out easily without the paint beeing transparent or only gluing sand...

Applying the structure paint
We made the small mistake and first tried it with a too thick paint. The problem with this is, that you get small areas where you pile up sand and others where nearly no sand sticks. The whole thing should be covered in an even but structured layer of our mix:

One fully coated modul
With six modules you should have enough place to store them, they will take at least one day to try. I was lucky to have a shelf on my balcony which was at this time empty, so I could build a "drying station" for all modules. In the end the structure of the paint should look like this:

Dried paint in detail
The glue holds everything together, some bigger stones in the bird grit tend to fall off if you rub with pressure over the module, but that will be solved in the next step of the HowTo.

Hope you enjoyed it so far.

So long,
Paradox0n

    1. Damnit, I hate the spam detection because I get no weekly reports for it... Ok to answer your question (I hope I got it right)...
As the package said "Vogelsand" is called bird grit in english... It's the sand you pour into the cages of your little birdies. Since this stuff also contains small pieces of clam shells and small stones, it has more structure than the normal sand you stea... get from childrens playgrounds :) And it has the advantage that you don't have to clean it before usage.

    2. Ah ok then.. was not sure if it was the sand for the cage or the bird food itself ;) Now to find the Turkish wording for it and see if I can find any locally ;)

      Cheers!
